What does GMO mean?

GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism.

With GMO seeds, a plant’s DNA has been altered in a laboratory in a way that cannot occur through natural crossbreeding or selection.

This can mean, for example, that a plant:

  • becomes resistant to certain diseases
  • can better withstand chemical pesticides
  • grows faster or produces higher yields

In Europe, GMO seeds are strictly regulated and are hardly permitted for consumers. Still, many people prefer to consciously choose seeds that stay as close to nature as possible — especially when growing at home.

What does GMO-Free mean?

If seeds are GMO-free, it means:

  • no genetic manipulation has been applied
  • traits have developed through natural breeding
  • selection and crossbreeding occur as they have for centuries

SeeddeeS® seeds are GMO-free. That means: no laboratory interventions and no modified genes — just the seed as it was meant to be.

For you as a grower, this means:

  • a natural and recognizable growth process
  • predictable plant behavior
  • room to learn, including small mistakes

Growth does not have to be perfect to be valuable.

What are coated seeds?

Some seeds are coated: they have an extra layer surrounding them.

This coating can consist of:

  • fertilizers
  • fungicides (against fungi)
  • pesticides (against insects or other organisms)
  • colorants and binding agents

This layer often makes seeds larger, heavier, and more uniform. That is useful in large-scale, mechanized agriculture, where efficiency and transport are important.

Fungicides and pesticides explained

Fungicides are substances that prevent or combat fungal diseases. Fungi can cause rot, mildew, leaf spots, or the failure of young seedlings. That is why fungicides are sometimes applied even before sowing — as a seed coating or through the soil.

Pesticides is a general term for substances used to control unwanted organisms such as insects, weeds, or fungi. They are used to reduce crop loss, but they can also affect soil life and beneficial insects such as bees.

With coated seeds, these substances may already be active before the seed even germinates. You can often recognize this by brightly colored seeds and warnings such as “not edible” or “wear gloves.”

For home growing, this is usually not necessary at all.

What does uncoated mean?

Uncoated seeds are pure and untreated. No protective layer, no additives — just the seed itself.

At SeeddeeS®, uncoated means:

  • no chemical or artificial coating
  • safe for soil life, bees, and insects
  • suitable for indoor sowing, balconies, and windowsills
  • ideal for beginners and children

Why does SeeddeeS® choose GMO-Free and uncoated?

Because we believe that growing:

  • doesn’t have to be faster
  • doesn’t have to be perfect
  • but it does have to be honest

SeeddeeS® exists to make sowing and growing fun, accessible, and easy to understand. That only works when the foundation is right. A pure seed teaches you to pay attention, practice patience, and trust what naturally unfolds.

Especially for home growing — on a windowsill, balcony, or in a small garden — pure sowing is more than enough.

What does this mean for your growth?

With SeeddeeS® seeds, you choose:

Whether you place one pot on your windowsill or create a balcony full of greenery: you begin with a seed that hides nothing.
